Joseph Landry & Brian Gazeley
“
A study in Black and White” Current Show
A study in Black and White offers a unique perspective on the creative process of both Mr. Landry and Mr. Gazeley; the show encompasses the various design models that they sculpt to gain a greater understanding of their subjects. As you view the progressive models of each piece, a sense of understanding becomes evident as the subjects personality begins to come through and it becomes obvious that through the process of each model, a different aspect of the subjects’ unique character is highlighted until a finished model brings together the aspects of each model which form the complexities of the subject. Often artists achieve unique perspectives on how their work should be displayed and as a gallery we must bring every aspect together to satisfy that artist and the viewer achieve the conditions necessary to best appreciate the work. When Misters Landry and Gazeley required a black void with only minor lighting and candle light, I must admit I was skeptical, yet as I view each sculpture in its pure white brilliance against the stark void, the movement and texture of the candle light seem to illuminate the pieces from within. Life seems to emanate from the inanimate and each work takes on a complex personality that photographs can never capture.
In preparing this exhibit I requested Mr. Freeman photograph the pieces. As the son of Mr. Landry and Mr. Gazeley he has grown up watching the creative process in his home and offers us a chance to see the respective pieces that he feels form the heart of a show of over 60 works.
I have enjoyed this journey with the Artists and it is a unique pleasure to produce an exhibit that highlights the talents of an entire family. I look forward to their next installation as they once again change their direction and focus.C. GrimaldiCurator St George Galleries
